Book Buy-Back

At the Illinois Homeschool Resource Center (ILHRC), you can bring in gently used homeschool curriculum and receive store credit on the spot. Use your credit anytime (no expiration) on used or new items in our shop.

Important: Buy-Back will not be available 9/16. We will be available on 9/23.

How It Works (3 Easy Steps)

  1. Bring it in — Drop off your books and materials during shop hours. No appointment needed.

  2. We review — We quickly check condition and look up the retail price (MSRP).

  3. Get credit — You receive store credit immediately based on the chart below.

Credit never expires. It’s non‑cash and non‑transferable, and can be used on any in‑stock items.

What We Accept

Yes: Recent editions of popular homeschool curriculum (Abeka, BJU Press, Notgrass, Apologia, IEW, Saxon, Math‑U‑See, Singapore, etc.), teacher guides, student texts with unused consumable pages, literature sets, high‑demand electives.

Not accepting at this time: Outdated editions, items with heavy writing, torn/missing pages, damaged bindings, incomplete sets, photocopies, or materials with water/smoke damage.

Tip: If you’re unsure, bring it—our team will sort and advise. You may choose donation for anything we can’t credit.

Quick Drop‑Off Checklist

  • Books are clean and free of sticky notes, food spills, or smoke odors.

  • Consumables (workbooks) are unused—or only lightly used if you’re okay with the lower Fair tier.

  • Sets are kept together (teacher + student + tests/keys) if possible.

We reserve the right to adjust rates during special events or for specialty/oversized items, boxed sets, or low‑demand titles. We’ll always tell you the credit amount before proceeding.

Using Your Store Credit

  • No expiration. Use it whenever you’re ready.

  • May cover up to 40% of a purchase. Store credit can pay at most 40% of the pre‑tax cart subtotal per transaction. The remaining 60% (plus tax/fees/shipping) must be paid with another method.

  • Applies to anything in store (used or new) unless specifically labeled otherwise.

  • Non‑cash, non‑transferable. Credit is tied to your customer account.

  • Partial use is fine. Any unused amount stays on your balance.

Examples

  • Cart subtotal: $100 → Max credit that can be applied: $40.

  • You have $75 in credit and your cart is $80 → You can apply $32 (40% of $80). Remaining credit: $43.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need an appointment?
Nope! Walk‑ins are welcome during bookstore hours. Large drop‑offs? Feel free to call ahead.

How many items can I bring?
Bring a bag or a trunk‑load—we’re happy to help. Very large drop‑offs may take extra time to process.

How do you determine retail price (MSRP)?
We reference publisher listings and trusted databases. If an official MSRP isn’t available, we use a standard value based on edition and current market demand.

What if I disagree with the condition you assigned?
We’re glad to walk through our criteria and take a second look. Final condition assignment is at ILHRC’s discretion.

Can I donate items instead of receiving credit?
Absolutely. You can mark items as donation during intake.

Can I get cash instead of store credit?
This program is store‑credit only. That’s how we keep credit percentages generous for families.

Why is store credit capped at 40% per purchase?
The cap keeps the program sustainable so we can continue offering high credit rates and keep shelves stocked for everyone. You can still use your remaining balance on future purchases with no expiration.

Fine Print (Policy Summary)

  • ILHRC may decline items due to condition, edition, or low demand.

  • Once accepted for credit, items become the property of ILHRC and may be priced at our discretion.

  • Credit is issued at intake; it is non‑cash, non‑transferable, and does not expire.

  • Per‑purchase cap: Store credit may cover up to 40% of the pre‑tax subtotal per transaction; taxes/fees/shipping require another payment method.

  • Rates, acceptance criteria, and limits may change during special promotions or peak seasons.
